Avocados – OH…how I love thee!!

If you don’t LOVE this amazing little fruit, man you need to start. Maybe you thought you needed to stay far away from the fatty little guy and you have considered it an indulgence. Well, only one of these things is true…you should think of it as an indulgence that you SHOULD include into your EVERY day nutrition. It’s like you get to cheat, on purpose and how amazing will it be when you start losing weight from this little addiction.

Let’s talk about why you need to add these to your nutritional wheelhouse. An excerpt from an article on healthiestfoods.co.uk

While avocados are relatively high calorie food with 100 grams of the fresh fruit providing around 160 calories, more than two thirds of those calories come from monounsaturated oleic acid. Studies have demonstrated that monounsaturated fats like oleic acid are much more likely to be utilized by your body as a slow burning energy source than saturated fat.

Increasing your intake of monounsaturated fats, versus both polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, has also been shown to provide a marked improvement in insulin sensitivity and glycemic control – a major factor in weight gain and developing diabetes.

As an additional health benefit, eating a diet high in the omega-9 fats, of which avocado is one of the best sources, has been shown to have the potential to reduce blood levels of ‘bad’ low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, at the same time as raising ‘good’ high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Maybe you thought avocados were only for guacamole, but I am here to tell you that isn’t all they can do. Slice them up and top your veggie omelet with it in the morning and BOOM, you are filling up for several hours like a champ. Mash them up and put them on your sandwich in place of mayo for a nice change along with the turkey and spinach you are putting on that sandwich. Dice them up and put them over your chicken tortilla soup, fajitas or frittata (or pretty much any recipe I give you, avocado can almost always be added to it! 🙂 Cook an egg in the middle of the avocado straight in the pan and seriously give yourself a TREAT.

Thanks for joining me on Foodie Friday! Food is a constant journey that takes you to new places… & I love being part of your journey.
