MILWAUKEE – Brand new Grim Reaper Fitness member Jack Klekamp posted the club’s highest finish and best time as 16 Reapers competed in USAT Age Group Nationals Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday’s race was the Olympic race for Age Group championships, for which competitors must qualify, typically, by winning their Age Group at a USAT-sanctioned event at some point in the previous year. The Sprint Nationals race held Sunday was open to all competitors, and featured a 750-meter swim, 20km bike, and 10km run.
Klekamp finished 8th in the 16-19 Age Group in the Olympic event with a time of 2:01:56. His 1500-meter swim time of 19:15 was 6th-best in the division.
David Quinn had the club’s next-best time posting a 2:18:08 to finish 44th in men’s 50-54, while Denise Cooksey placed 20th in women’s 60-64 at 2:54:04.
Also competing were Leann Murphy (47th in women’s 25-29 at 2:27:00); Scott Gamboe (114th in 45-49 at 2:27:30); Lisa Becharas (67th in 25-29 at 2:33:20); Celeste Kudrys (77th in 35-39) at 2:34:34; and Kris Hohulin (150th in 40-44 at 3:13:49).
Meanwhile, in Saturday’s sprint, Carey Weaver posted the club’s best finish coming in at 1:17:21 to place 35th in the 55-59 Age Group. Other competitors included: Chris Braun (66th in 15-19 at 1:17:21); Tori Morger (57th in 15-19 at 1:30:38); Buck Manley (85th in 55-59 at 1:38:02); and Nancy Braun (55th in 50-54 at 1:40:49).
And on Lake Michigan’s eastern shore, Rick Vincent completed Steelhead 70.3 at Benton Harbor, MI, in 5:30:32. It was Vincent’s second 70.3 distance race – he did Steelhead in ’14, as well – and he cut 47 minutes from his time.
