
DECATUR – Michael Braun won the Lakeside Triathlon sprint race, while Carey Weaver and Jason Sturdyvin both placed in the top 5 for Grim Reaper Fitness Sunday.
Braun finished in 1:17:57 to win by three and a half minutes over his nearest competitor. The race featured a 400-yard swim, 19-mile bike, and 3.2-mile run. Braun was the only athlete to crack 20 minutes on the run, coming in at 19:59.
Weaver place 3rd overall in 1:23:03, while his bike time of 49:21 was the best of the day. Sturdyvin was 4th overall and won the 30-34 age group in 1:23:47.
Chris Braun also finished in the top 10, coming in 10th to win the 19-and-under in 1:26:27. His swim time of 6:09 was 2nd best on the day.
Also winning age groups were Lisa Kiley taking 50-55 in 1:44:16, Pam Walden in 50-54 at 1:48:20, Lily Matthews in 19-and-under in 1:49:08, and Natalie McKee in 35-39 at 1:52:44. Riley Cate’s team won the women’s relay.
The intermediate distance race featured a 1200-yard swim, 19-mile bike and a 4.5-mile run. Lisa Becharas finished 4th in the Elite Division, posting a time of 1:42:29, which was good for 10th among all racers.
Nancy Braun won the 50-54 age group in 2:18:50, while Keith Owens was 3rd in men’s 20-24 at 2:26:04. Jennifer Horstman’s relay team placed 3rd in the co-ed division, finishing at 2:03:47.
In Saturday’s youth triathlon at Decatur, Bella and Alex Thurston each won their age groups. Bella Thurston won the 7-8 division of the duathlon, while Alex Thurston won the 19-11 division of the duathlon. Riley Cate placed 2nd in the 12-14 division, completing the race in 33:29. The race consisted of a 250-yard swim, 3.4 mile bike and 1-mile run.
In other races, Hulda Black won the 30-39 Age Group in the Olympic race at Interlochen (Michigan) 2:47:45, which was good for 5th overall, while Julie Sibley and Maria Hernandez competed in the Muncie (Indiana) Half Ironman.
